Architecture in the Netherlands' has been an indispensable reference work for anyone interested or professionally involved in Dutch architecture for 30 years. The Yearbook is Dutch architecture?s international calling card. The three-person editorial team selects noteworthy projects that were completed in the past year and describes major developments that affect Dutch architecture, with particular attention to commissionership, architecture policy and projects that have achieved spectacular results with limited resources. With a special contribution by Oliver Wainwright (architecture and design critic of 'The Guardian') on Dutch architecture as an export product.

Wiel Arets is one of the most influential architects in Holland today. His international reputation is founded on such works as his pharmacy and apartment building in Hapert (1988–1989) , the Academy of Art and Architecture in Maastricht (1990–1993) And the headquarters for the AZL Pension Fund in Heerlen (1990 –1995). Wiel Arets' architecture disrupts the smooth hermeticism of modern block building. He juts forward building sections, gear-toothed fashion, into the existing city plan. The buildings are incised into the city tissue like strange bodies, causing us to question and tug at stale conceptions of urban environment. All are characterized by the pure severity of materials used, exacting attention to detail and a multiplicity of natural lighting effects which enfold in the building's interior. Film-like, this book documents twelve Arets buildings and projects from the 1990s with photographs by Kim Zwarts. Ulrike Jehle-Schulte Strathaus 'foreword and Bart Lootsma's concluding essay clarify the theoretical underpinnings.

Summary: Few know the full scope of Rietveld's oeuvre. He designed on every scale: from a bus stop to a small village. Commonly regarded as the most important architect within the De Stijl group, Rietveld was also one of the founders of CIAM. He continued his experiments right up to his death in 1964. His work and teachings have been a major influence in the world of architecture and design. Rietveld's Universe is a comprehensive publication presenting the results of new insights and research, including contributions by international leading scholars on t he subject. Focusing on the context in which Rietveld's work should be placed, this book addresses his interpretation of space and the way he designed it, as well as the mutual influences between his work and that of contemporaries such as Mondrian, Van Doesburg, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto.
